Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has confirmed that the party has reached out to Peter Obi, requesting his return to their fold.

Gana made this revelation during an appearance on AIT's programme, Focus Nigeria, on Friday, indicating that the PDP is actively working to bring back prominent politicians who had previously left the party.

Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, had resigned from the PDP on May 25, 2022, just days before the party's presidential primary. At the time, Obi cited that "recent developments in the party do not support constructive contributions" as his reason for departure.

When questioned specifically about whether the party had initiated conversations with Obi regarding a potential return, Gana responded emphatically, "Why not?"

"He [Obi] is not the only person. We are also moving to other persons. But I don't want to announce until we really get there," Gana elaborated, suggesting that the PDP's reconciliation efforts extend beyond just Obi.

The PDP stalwart expressed confidence in the party's renewed structure, stating, "I have a very solid platform. I can now go back to these people and say the platform you were complaining about is now set, proper, and ready to move. I know many of them would respond."

This development comes amid reports that Obi has been engaging with various political figures across party lines. Recently, he visited former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in Abuja, fueling speculation about his political future.

Political analysts suggest that these moves by the PDP could signal a major realignment in Nigeria's political landscape ahead of future elections, as parties begin strategic positioning and consolidation of their bases.

The PDP, which ruled Nigeria for 16 consecutive years (1999-2015) before losing power to the All Progressives Congress, has been working to strengthen its structure and appeal following consecutive electoral defeats at the national level.
