The Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of two men who were caught impersonating operatives of the anti-graft agency. Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman were sentenced on Friday, July 25, 2025, by Justice Nasiru Saminu of the Kano State High Court after they pleaded guilty to the offence.
The duo were arraigned on a one-count charge of criminal impersonation after falsely presenting themselves as EFCC investigators. Evidence presented in court revealed that both men used fake EFCC identity cards in a calculated attempt to appear genuine while carrying out fraudulent activities.
According to the charge sheet presented in court: "That you, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 at Kano within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, falsely impersonated to be investigators of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) where you used false identity card and paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law."
Following their guilty plea, EFCC counsel Idris I. Haruna presented the facts of the case and urged the court to convict the defendants. Justice Saminu, in agreement with the prosecution's submission, convicted both men and sentenced them to six months imprisonment each, with an option of a N50,000 fine.
The conviction came after the two impostors were apprehended by authentic EFCC operatives while attempting to carry out fraudulent activities using their counterfeit identities. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by the EFCC to crack down not only on financial crimes but also on individuals who impersonate its officials to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
This conviction serves as a warning to others who might contemplate similar criminal activities, as the law enforcement agencies continue to maintain vigilance against all forms of impersonation and fraud.
