Nigerian singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has clarified that his performances at political events should not be interpreted as political affiliation with any party.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Real Shareholders podcast, the artist emphasized his independence and explained that such appearances are strictly professional engagements.
"As an artist, we are usually billed to perform. In the current economy, if you're opportuned to even get a gig from a political party, you're lucky. So, respect to the party," Terry G stated.
He further explained his position, saying, "But as a musician, I'm just doing my job [performing], I'm an independent artist. I'm so independent. I only went to political events to perform. At least, fans should have judged me based on what I said there, but they are now judging me based on what I did."
The "Akpako Master" hitmaker expressed frustration at being criticized for simply doing his job. "No, you don't need to judge me for that. I went to do my job. If I had said people should vote for APC, that's a different thing. I went to do my job just like my other colleagues. I don't know why mine is different," he added.
Terry G's comments come after he faced significant backlash on social media for performing at President Bola Tinubu's pre-inauguration concert at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, in May 2023.
In November 2023, the singer publicly called out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over alleged unpaid fees, claiming that individuals had diverted the payment he was supposed to receive for his performance at the event.
This situation highlights the complex relationship between Nigerian entertainers and political events, where artists often face public scrutiny for their professional appearances regardless of their personal political views.
