Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has firmly declared his intention to return to Edo State despite threats from Governor Monday Okpebholo regarding his safety.

Speaking to journalists in Awka on Wednesday, Obi dismissed the governor's warnings that his safety could not be guaranteed in Edo State, stating that such threats hold no meaning to him.

"Threats don't make any meaning to me. I receive threats everyday. Do you know how many times I have been threatened all over Nigeria? I receive threats everyday actually, the ones you know about was because it was vocal, but I will not be afraid," Obi stated.

The former Anambra governor emphasized his commitment to investing in people rather than engaging in political confrontations. "If I have the opportunity to go to Benin and make donations again, trust me, I will. I have always said that we should de-emphasize politics and think more of how to invest in the people," he added.

Obi suggested that Governor Okpebholo should have appreciated his contributions to the state instead of issuing threats. "What the governor should have done is to complement what I was doing in his state instead of threatening me. He should be sincerely grateful," he remarked.

The comments came while Obi was visiting his alma mater, Christ the King College (CKC) in Onitsha, where he presented a donation of N50 million contributed by himself and other alumni of the institution. The funds are intended for the construction of staff quarters and an administrative building for the school.

Explaining his philanthropic efforts, Obi said: "I say it everyday that those who have verifiable honest means of livelihood should endeavour to invest in schools, invest in society, invest in health, lift people from poverty and empower others. I did not say go and steal money and donate to schools."

The political tension between Obi and Governor Okpebholo has attracted attention from various quarters, with civil groups reportedly urging the US to ignore visa ban petitions against the Edo governor over the issue.

Obi maintained that his focus remains on educational investments across Nigeria, revealing plans to visit more schools in the coming days. "I'm in school today to make a donation, I'm going to be in school somewhere in Nigeria tomorrow too. I'm going to be in school on Saturday, I'm going to be in school on Sunday and even on Monday. Forget about the threat, it's a waste of time," he concluded.
