Two separate attacks by gunmen on Chirang community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State have resulted in the deaths of 14 villagers and a mobile police officer on Thursday.
According to local sources, the first attack occurred around 4:00 pm when villagers returning from Bokkos market to Mangor village were ambushed by suspected terrorists. The second incident had taken place earlier in the day when a mobile police officer was killed at his checkpoint along Richa Road in the same local government area.
Kefas Mallai, the chairman of Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, confirmed the killings on Thursday night. He stated that 14 natives were killed in the ambush while three others sustained injuries. Security personnel have since taken control of the area to ensure community safety.
"Our hearts are bleeding because early the morning, on 24th July, 2025, a MOPOL was killed at his duty post (checkpoint) along Richa road, Bokkos LGA," Mallai said, describing the situation as "very unfortunate."
The Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Amalau Amalau, also confirmed the attacks, characterizing the situation as an emergency. Attempts to reach Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off.
This latest violence adds to the growing security concerns in Plateau State, where communities have faced recurring attacks in recent months. The Bokkos area has been particularly vulnerable, with local authorities calling for increased security measures to protect residents.
The attack pattern – targeting villagers returning from market activities – has raised concerns about the safety of routine community movements and economic activities in the region. Local security observers note that such tactics aim to disrupt normal life and create fear among rural communities.
