The Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern reminder to the party's 2023 Vice-Presidential candidate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, emphasizing that the leadership issues within the party have been definitively resolved by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman of the party, Senator Nenadi Usman, released a statement in Abuja on Wednesday addressing Baba-Ahmed's recent actions.
The statement was prompted by Baba-Ahmed's purported recognition of Julius Abure as the substantive Labour Party National Chairman during a recent event, contradicting the court's ruling.
"It is imperative to state that the leadership question within the Labour Party has been conclusively settled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria," Asogwa declared in the statement.
According to Asogwa, the party had taken notice of the former Vice-Presidential candidate's participation in a meeting convened by the Abure-led faction, a move that appears to challenge the court's decision.
The media adviser emphasized that the "unambiguous" judgment of the Supreme Court had effectively nullified any claim Abure might be making to the office of National Chairman. He further noted that the judgment upheld Usman's leadership as the appellant in the case, granting all reliefs sought in her appeal.
In a conciliatory tone, Asogwa urged all party members to remain calm, steadfast, and resolute, assuring them that the current leadership is actively reaching out to aggrieved members to foster lasting reconciliation and progress within the party.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts to unify the Labour Party following internal divisions that emerged after the 2023 general elections, where the party made significant inroads into Nigeria's political landscape.
The leadership tussle has been a point of concern for supporters of the party, particularly as it prepares for future electoral contests and seeks to establish itself as a formidable alternative in Nigeria's political arena.
