Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has issued a stern warning that his administration may confiscate any land that becomes the subject of violent communal clashes, following recent deadly conflicts in Lamurde Local Government Area.
The governor made this declaration on Tuesday during an assessment visit to communities affected by violence that erupted on July 5 over disputed farmland ownership, resulting in multiple casualties, extensive property damage, and displacement of residents.
"I urge you to sheath your swords, forgive one another, and live together in peace. This government will not tolerate further violence," Governor Fintiri stated during his visit to Waduku, Lakan, and Rugange communities, which were at the center of the conflict.
Emphasizing his administration's zero-tolerance approach to land-related violence, the governor added, "You must not trespass on land that does not belong to you. Land disputes will not be allowed to fuel further bloodshed."
Accompanied by senior government officials and security commanders, Fintiri assured victims that his administration would take all necessary measures to guarantee their safety and restore normalcy to the area.
"It is our responsibility to protect you so you can go to your farms and markets and conduct your daily activities peacefully. Whatever it takes to restore peace, the government will do," he promised.
During the governor's visit, community representatives expressed their grievances and hopes for reconciliation. Mr. Danladi Kotohula, speaking for the Bachama community in Waduku, criticized law enforcement's response to the crisis, claiming, "The farmland dispute was the main cause. The DPO did not intervene early enough to prevent this from getting out of hand."
In Lakan, Mr. Hygimus Mangu of the Chobo community lamented the loss of harmony between previously peaceful neighbors. "These two communities have lived in peace for decades, even intermarried. We must return to that unity," Mangu stated.
The violence, which persisted for several days, has highlighted the volatile nature of land disputes in the region and the urgent need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms.
Governor Fintiri's threat to seize disputed lands represents a significant escalation in government intervention, signaling his administration's determination to prevent future outbreaks of communal violence in Adamawa State.
