Popular Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie, has publicly declared that Nigeria's next President should come from the South-East region, citing principles of fairness and equity in the country's leadership rotation.
"The next President of Nigeria should come from the South-East in fairness and equity. That's just the truth and that's how it should be," Edochie stated in a video broadcast shared via his Instagram page on Monday.
The actor's statement has surprised many political observers, as he has been known as a vocal supporter of incumbent President Bola Tinubu, who has reportedly expressed interest in seeking reelection in the 2027 presidential race.
Edochie has previously urged Nigerians to endure the current economic challenges under President Tinubu's administration, suggesting that citizens would soon begin to experience the benefits of the government's economic reform policies.
The South-East region, predominantly inhabited by the Igbo ethnic group, has not produced a President since Nigeria returned to democratic governance in 1999. Political analysts have long debated the need for inclusive representation at the highest level of governance to foster national unity and address feelings of marginalization among various regions.
Edochie's call adds to growing voices advocating for a power shift to the South-East in the interest of national cohesion and equitable political representation across Nigeria's geopolitical zones.
The actor, who has occasionally expressed political ambitions himself, has maintained significant influence in Nigerian popular culture through his successful career in Nollywood.
