Jude Ezenwafor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra State election, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after being shot by gunmen in Abuja.
Ezenwafor, currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Abuja where he awaits surgery, revealed to journalists early Saturday morning that he faced a life-threatening situation when armed assailants confronted him around Wuse 2 on Friday night.
Speaking from his hospital bed while enduring significant pain from his injuries, Ezenwafor confirmed the attack occurred as he was returning home after an appointment.
"I'm currently in the hospital. The doctors are making efforts to operate on me so that they can remove bullets from my body," he stated.
According to reports, the PDP Governorship candidate was not the only victim of the attack. Two other individuals accompanying him were also shot during the incident, raising concerns about political violence ahead of the Anambra gubernatorial election.
This attack comes at a critical time in Anambra's political landscape, as parties intensify preparations for the upcoming state elections. The incident has sparked discussions about the safety of political candidates and the need for enhanced security measures during the electoral period.
As of the time of reporting, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and authorities have yet to make any official statement regarding the incident or potential suspects.
The PDP in Anambra State is expected to issue a comprehensive statement on the matter as more details emerge about the assassination attempt on their standard-bearer.
