Kanunta Kanu, the younger brother of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has strongly refuted claims by the federal government that his brother deliberately threatened Nigeria's unity through his actions.
In a statement released on Friday, July 18, Kanunta insisted that Nigeria was "already broken" before his brother's alleged actions, challenging the government's narrative presented in court.
The federal government had told the Federal High Court in Abuja that Nnamdi Kanu made broadcasts on Biafra Radio where he "openly and publicly declared his intention to break up Nigeria." Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, representing the government, claimed that Kanu's broadcasts caused Nigerians to live in "great fear."
These submissions were made in response to a No Case application filed by Nnamdi Kanu's legal team.
Reacting to these claims on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kanunta challenged the government's position, stating: "Is Nigeria not broken up already @LeadershipNGA, when an impostor ruled Nigeria for 6 years?"
He further dismissed the prosecution's arguments as "based on hearsay" and called on the defense counsel, Agabi, to present evidence to counter the government's claims.
The case continues to draw significant attention as it touches on sensitive issues of national unity, separatist movements, and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
This development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Nnamdi Kanu, who faces multiple charges related to his activities as the leader of IPOB, a group advocating for the secession of southeastern Nigeria to form an independent Biafra state.
