The Labour Party's National Executive Committee (NEC) has elected Senator Nenadi Usman as its Interim National Chairperson and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary during a crucial meeting held on Friday in Abuja.
The newly constituted interim working committee will oversee all party activities until the upcoming national convention, where elections for a new National Executive Committee will be conducted.
According to sources present at the meeting, the NEC also approved a comprehensive schedule for conducting ward congresses, local government area congresses, state congresses, zonal congresses, and the National Convention of the Labour Party.
The party's National Secretariat has been mandated to publish detailed guidelines and timelines to ensure transparent and democratic elections at all levels of the party structure.
This leadership transition comes at a critical time for the Labour Party as it prepares for future electoral challenges and seeks to strengthen its organizational structure nationwide.
In a related development, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State recently emphasized the importance of strengthening the Labour Party, stating, "We must do anything to make Labour Party work." His comments underscore the growing significance of the party in Nigeria's political landscape.
The Obidient Movement, a support group associated with the party, has also clarified that there is no friction between former presidential candidate Peter Obi and the newly elected interim chairperson, Nenadi Usman, dispelling rumors of internal conflicts within the party.
