The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a scathing criticism against President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of exploiting the burial ceremony of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a political maneuver to appease the Northern region.
In a statement released on Friday and signed by the party's Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC characterized the government's actions surrounding Buhari's death as a calculated public relations strategy designed to rehabilitate Tinubu's image in the North.
The opposition party specifically pointed to the tribute paid during the Federal Executive Council meeting and the presence of Buhari's son, Yusuf, describing these gestures as "a calculated PR stunt by an unpopular government."
According to the ADC, the Tinubu administration spent its first year in office attributing Nigeria's economic challenges to Buhari's policies, only to perform a dramatic reversal following the former president's death.
"Grief is not a campaign strategy," the ADC declared in its statement, adding: "Nevertheless, we are confident that Nigerians can see through their grand deceit. No public relations stunt can save a government that has behaved in the last two years like an army of occupation."
The party suggested that this apparent change in stance represents a deliberate attempt by the Tinubu government to curry favor with Northern voters and Buhari loyalists, following what they perceive as declining popularity in those regions.
This criticism comes amid a series of public appearances by President Tinubu, including his visit to Kano to condole with the family of the late business mogul Aminu Dantata, whom he described as a man of "immense personality and integrity."
The administration has also recently made several appointments, including Muhammad Babangida and seven others as chairmen and heads of government agencies, which some political analysts view as part of broader efforts to strengthen political alliances.
Meanwhile, in Damaturu, the Emir has led Islamic scholars in special prayers following Buhari's death, highlighting the former president's continued significance in Northern Nigeria.
