The Nigerian Presidency has announced that a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, to honor former President Muhammadu Buhari who passed away recently.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed this development in a statement released on his X account on Wednesday, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead the tribute session for the departed leader.

"A special session of the Federal Executive Council in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari will be held on Thursday, 17 July, from 5pm. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead the session of tributes for the departed leader," Onanuga stated.

The announcement comes after the Federal Government had initially postponed the special session earlier this week. The late President Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, following his death on Sunday at the London Clinic.

The state burial was attended by numerous dignitaries, marking the end of an era for the former military general who served as Nigeria's president from 2015 to 2023.

Since his passing, tributes have poured in from across the nation and beyond. Former Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi, remarked that "Buhari served Nigerians more than he served himself," highlighting the late president's dedication to public service.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Assembly has held a prayer session for the former president and adjourned sitting until July 21 as a mark of respect.

The special FEC session scheduled for Thursday is expected to bring together cabinet members and other government officials to pay their last respects to the former president who led Nigeria during a challenging period in the nation's history.
