Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has disclosed the reasons behind his visit to the graveside of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 16, 2025, in a London clinic.

According to Atiku, he, alongside former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other members of the opposition coalition, visited the late president's widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and the graveside to offer special prayers for the deceased.

The former president's remains were flown back to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday where he was laid to rest according to Islamic rites. The following day, prominent political figures from across party lines gathered to pay their respects.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku detailed his three-day condolence visit: "This afternoon, I completed a three-day condolence visit to Daura, Katsina State, where I joined many other sympathisers for the third-day prayers in honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari."

"Before participating in the larger congregational prayers, I, along with former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, offered special prayers at the graveside of the deceased," he continued.

The former vice president also mentioned that he visited the widowed former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, to express his condolences before departing Daura. He concluded his message with prayers for the deceased: "Once again, may Almighty Allah forgive his sins and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus."

Other notable figures who joined the condolence visit included Peter Obi and several members of the opposition coalition, demonstrating a moment of national unity transcending political differences.

The burial ceremonies have prompted various responses across the nation, including the Sokoto State Assembly holding a prayer session for the late president and adjourning its sitting until July 21.
