Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has made strong claims about the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that the former leader "dealt with and damaged" his family more than any other family in Nigeria during his tenure as Head of State.
Kuti, son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, expressed these sentiments in a video shared on his Instagram page following Buhari's recent death. The musician, however, clarified that Buhari's passing does not represent justice for the alleged persecution his family endured.
"There's nobody Buhari has offended and damaged like my family. Buhari dealt with my family, but his death is not any type of justice or victory for my family," Seun stated in the video.
The musician expressed regret that his father Fela, and uncles Koye and Beko, whom he claimed were unjustly persecuted by Buhari, died before the former president. He described them as "better men" than Buhari.
"My only regret is that my dad Fela, and my uncles Koye and Beko died before him; all better men than him. The only solace I can take from his death is that the three of them will gang up against him in the afterlife if there's such a thing," he added.
The Kuti family has a long history of political activism in Nigeria, with Fela Kuti being known for his outspoken criticism of military regimes, including when Buhari served as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985. During this period, Fela was imprisoned on charges that many considered politically motivated.
Muhammadu Buhari, who served as both a military Head of State and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday in a London clinic. His remains were buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday with full military honors.
