Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has publicly criticized his old club's decision to sign Chelsea attacker Noni Madueke, expressing disbelief at the transfer move that has seen the player agree terms with the Gunners.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson made his feelings clear about the transfer, stating: "I'm flabbergasted by Arsenal signing of Noni Madueke. I am shocked. I just don't see it. It's a lot of money for a player who isn't a prolific goalscorer."
The pundit further questioned Madueke's consistency, adding: "He's the sort of player that has a good game here and a good game there, but that'll be it. The consistency of performance isn't there."
Madueke's move represents a significant transfer between the London rivals, with Arsenal reaching an agreement with Chelsea for the attacker during this summer's transfer window. The financial details of the deal have not been fully disclosed, but Merson's comments suggest he believes Arsenal may be overpaying for the player.
This transfer comes amid other Arsenal activities in the market, including securing Viktor Gyökeres' signing and showing interest in Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze. The Gunners have also confirmed deals for youngsters Ismail and Oyetunde as they strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
Madueke, who has shown flashes of brilliance at Chelsea but struggled to cement a regular starting position, will be hoping to prove Merson wrong and establish himself as a key player under Mikel Arteta's management at the Emirates Stadium.
