The British High Commission in Nigeria has officially expressed condolences following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London clinic.

In a brief statement posted on their official X account on Monday, the Commission extended sympathies to the late president's family and the Nigerian government.

"The British High Commission Nigeria mourns the passing of the former president, HE General Muhammadu Buhari GCFR. Our condolences go out to his family, the people of Nigeria, and the Nigerian government," the statement read.

The UK government joins several other nations and international bodies that have already sent condolence messages following Buhari's death. The United States of America and China were among the first foreign governments to express their sympathies to Nigeria.

BenriNews reports that preparations for the former president's funeral are underway, with a committee headed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike already established by President Bola Tinubu.

According to sources, five presidents are scheduled to attend the burial ceremony in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari's hometown.

The former president's death has prompted tributes from across Nigeria's political spectrum, including former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and various regional leadership forums.

Nigerian civil servants have also extended their condolences to President Tinubu and the nation at large as the country mourns the loss of its former leader.
