The Nigerian government has officially announced the burial arrangements for former President Muhammadu Buhari, with President Bola Tinubu constituting a high-level Inter-Ministerial Committee to oversee the state burial proceedings.
The committee, which will work in collaboration with the Katsina State government and the late president's family, is being chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed these details during a press briefing on Monday, outlining the comprehensive structure of the committee tasked with ensuring a dignified farewell for the former leader.
Committee Composition
The Inter-Ministerial Committee includes several key government officials: the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; Minister of Defence; Minister of Information and National Orientation; Minister of Works; Minister of Interior; Minister of the FCT; and Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
Other members include the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare; Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy; National Security Adviser; Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters; Inspector-General of Police; Director-General of the Department of State Services; and the Chief of Defence Staff.
The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, will serve as the Secretary to the committee, ensuring proper coordination of all burial activities.
Burial Schedule
According to the minister, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council have been directed to proceed to Katsina to participate in the full schedule of burial rites. They will remain for the third-day prayers in Daura on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
"As we prepare to bid farewell to one of Nigeria's foremost statesmen, the Federal Government urges all Nigerians to join in prayers and reflection for the repose of the soul of our former leader," the minister stated.
In a related development, Tuesday's special Federal Executive Council meeting has been canceled due to the former president's death, with a new date to be announced later.
Reports indicate that five presidents are scheduled to attend Buhari's funeral in Daura, highlighting the international recognition of the former Nigerian leader's stature.
The United Kingdom government has also extended condolences following the passing of the former president, joining numerous national and international figures in mourning his death.
