President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at a London clinic.

The emergency meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, will be dedicated to honoring the late president, according to a statement personally signed by President Tinubu.

"I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour," Tinubu stated. "The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country."

Buhari had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness at the London facility before his death. In his statement, President Tinubu also prayed that God would forgive Buhari of all his shortcomings while he was alive.

The news of Buhari's passing has prompted condolences from eminent Nigerians to the late president's family and the Federal Government. This development comes as the nation begins to process the loss of its immediate past leader who handed over power to Tinubu in May 2023.

The presidency has also reportedly dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari's remains back to Nigeria, as the country prepares for what will likely be a period of national mourning.
