Kanunta Kanu, the younger brother of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has made controversial statements following the announcement of former President Muhammadu Buhari's death on Sunday.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Kanunta claimed that "the cabal and British government have finally played their last joker" regarding the former president's passing.
"Gen Mohammadu Buhari is dead for the second time. Finally the cabals and the British Gov have played their last joker on a hopeless country called Nigeria," Kanunta wrote on the social media platform.
His statement references longstanding claims made by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu dating back to 2017-2018, when Buhari spent five months in Britain receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. During that period, Nnamdi Kanu had alleged that Buhari died and was replaced by an impostor identified as "Jubril of Sudan."
Upon his return to Nigeria in 2018, Buhari had firmly denied these allegations, insisting he was not dead and rejecting claims about being replaced by an impostor.
The news of Buhari's death was announced on Sunday by his former spokesman, Garba Shehu, who revealed that the former president died in a London clinic where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
The passing of the former Nigerian leader has triggered various reactions across the political spectrum, with figures including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, Reno Omokri, Shehu Sani, and WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressing their condolences and reflections on Buhari's legacy.
Garba Shehu had also recently shared insights about Buhari's modest lifestyle during his presidency, claiming that the former leader preferred simple meals like beans and pap, and had rejected a proposed N10 million food budget.
