Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers launched a deadly attack at a construction site in Nunya, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State on Saturday evening, killing a soldier and a driver working with a Chinese construction company.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred on July 12, 2025, when approximately six attackers arrived at the site on three motorcycles. The assailants were wearing military camouflage and armed with assault rifles.
The gunmen stormed the construction site operated by a Chinese engineering firm, opened fire on workers, and fatally shot one of the drivers. A soldier providing security at the location was also killed, with reports indicating that his service rifle was taken by the attackers before they fled the scene.
Investigations suggest the assailants may have crossed over from a neighboring state and are believed to be part of a notorious kidnapping gang. Sources close to the investigation alleged that the attack was led by a suspected criminal with military training who is currently at large.
Security operatives responded promptly to the incident, conducting a coordinated operation in the area. The remains of the deceased driver were evacuated and deposited at a local hospital. Several spent AK-47 ammunition shells were reportedly recovered from the scene, providing potential evidence for investigators.
Following a tip-off, authorities arrested a suspect believed to have connections to the attack at a hideout in Umuahia North Local Government Area. The suspect is currently being detained and undergoing interrogation, while efforts to apprehend other fleeing suspects continue.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the Abia State Police Command. Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, for comment were unsuccessful.
Security operations remain active in the area as authorities intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice. This attack adds to growing security concerns in the region, with similar incidents reported in neighboring communities in recent months.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of foreign investment projects and construction sites in the state, with local leaders calling for enhanced security measures to protect workers and investments.
