The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended six individuals suspected of internet fraud in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, following an intelligence-driven operation.

According to a statement released on Saturday by Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, the arrests were carried out by operatives from the Uyo Zonal Directorate at Ekamba and Ekpri Nsukara areas of Nwaniba.

"Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Uyo Zonal Directorate, have arrested six suspected internet fraudsters at Ekamba and Ekpri Nsukara areas of Nwaniba, in Akwa Ibom State," the statement partly read.

The anti-graft agency revealed that the operation led to the recovery of eight mobile phones and two laptops from the suspects. The EFCC spokesperson confirmed that the suspects would be charged to court soon.

This arrest comes as part of the Commission's ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and financial fraud in Nigeria, particularly targeting young individuals involved in various internet scams that have damaged the country's international reputation.

The EFCC has intensified its operations across various zones in recent months, with similar arrests reported in other states including Abeokuta, where 48 suspected internet fraudsters were recently apprehended.

The Commission continues to warn Nigerian youths against engaging in cybercrime, highlighting the legal consequences and the negative impact on both personal futures and the nation's image.
