Veteran Nollywood actress Chinyere Wilfred has opened up about the evolving landscape of parenting and marriage in contemporary Nigerian society, pointing to Gen Z influence and shifting cultural values as key factors behind increasing family instability.
In a recent interview, Wilfred, who has maintained a successful marriage for over three decades, expressed concern about the rapid changes in family dynamics compared to previous generations.
"Parents of this generation are Gen Z parents. Back in our days, parents would not do most of the things we see today," she stated. "Look at what is happening to marriages now, you buy Aso Ebi and before you know it, they are divorced. We were not like that before. I've been married for over 30 years and I'm still happily married."
The respected actress revealed that her role in the TV series "Sands of Time" prompted personal reflection on her own parenting approach. She acknowledged discovering a tendency toward overprotection after reviewing her performance.
"While shooting, I saw myself in that character. I realized I was overreacting with my children," Wilfred confessed. "During the act, I did not notice it, but while I re-watched it, I saw my faults. When I got home, I became calm with my son."
The actress highlighted the delicate balance parents must strike between protection and fostering independence. Despite her son being a university graduate, she admitted to maintaining strict boundaries, saying, "Even now, despite he is a graduate, he still can't sleep out. I thought I was protecting them, but I was overprotecting them."
Wilfred's candid insights come at a time when many Nigerian families are navigating the tension between traditional values and modern parenting approaches. Her perspective offers valuable reflection for parents struggling to find the right balance in raising children in today's rapidly changing social landscape.
The actress's comments have sparked conversations about how cultural shifts are reshaping Nigerian family structures and the potential long-term impacts on society.
