The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the 19 Northern States and FCT, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, has advocated for mandatory psychological evaluations for all Nigerians seeking elective political offices.

Speaking at the Royal Ambassadors Men's Missionary Union summit in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna on Saturday, Hayab attributed many leadership failures in Nigeria to emotional and mental instability among office holders.

"When you hear the way some of our leaders talk, you begin to question their mental fitness. Governance is too sensitive to be handed over to individuals who lack empathy, emotional control, or sound judgment," Hayab stated during his address.

The cleric, who also chairs the National Patrons Forum of the Royal Ambassadors of Nigeria (RAN), delivered a keynote address titled 'Overcoming Evil Vices: A Guide for the Young Child' at the event.

He drew parallels between marriage preparations and political leadership, saying, "Just like we recommend psychological evaluations before marriage, we should apply the same principle to public service, where the actions of one individual can affect millions."

Hayab warned that untreated mental health issues not only destroy families but can also endanger the stability of entire nations when present in leadership circles.

Youth Guidance and Societal Values

Beyond political leadership concerns, the CAN chairman also addressed Nigerian youth, cautioning them against destructive behaviors such as drug abuse, cybercrime, and violence.

"Drugs deceive and destroy," he emphasized, adding that "'Yahoo' is not a career path. If you want to rise to higher ground, you must embrace discipline, hard work, and faith in God."

On gender-specific concerns, Hayab encouraged girls to prioritize education over early marriage while urging boys to respect and protect the dignity of their female peers.

"Education empowers the mind and prepares you to solve real problems. It is not just about securing a job but about building a purposeful life," he advised.

The religious leader further recommended that young people seek mentors with integrity and surround themselves with positive influences that foster growth and godly values.

Mr. Pleni Thomas Magaji, Director of the Royal Ambassadors, Sabon Tasha Chapter, commended Hayab's message as timely and courageous. He explained that the annual summit aims to nurture young Christians with Biblical principles and sound leadership ethics for national transformation.
