A member of the House of Representatives, Usman Midala Balama, has publicly endorsed the creation of Savannah State from the current Borno State, describing the initiative as crucial for enhancing governance, security, and resource management in the region.

During the North-East zonal hearing on constitution review held in Maiduguri, Midala, who represents Hawul/Askira-Uba federal constituency, emphasized that Borno's substantial population and its 27 local government areas make it the most suitable candidate for subdivision in the North-East region.

"Borno has the largest population and the highest number of LGAs in the North-East. That makes it the most qualified for state creation," he stated during the proceedings.

The lawmaker argued that smaller administrative units typically facilitate more effective management and service delivery to citizens. "With Savannah State, both Borno and Southern Borno will benefit from improved development and security," Midala added.

According to the representative, the demand for Savannah State represents a unified aspiration that transcends all sections of Borno. He urged residents to support the initiative, noting that the ongoing constitutional review presents a timely opportunity to address the genuine desires of the people.

The proposal comes amid longstanding discussions about restructuring Nigeria's states to enhance administrative efficiency and promote more equitable development across the country. If approved, Savannah State would become one of the newest states in Nigeria's federation.

Political analysts suggest that state creation could potentially address some of the security challenges facing the region, as smaller administrative units might enable more focused security operations and governance structures tailored to local needs.
