In a sweeping operation against drug trafficking and abuse, security agencies have arrested scores of suspects in a coordinated raid across multiple locations in Damaturu, Yobe State. The operation, conducted on Thursday, targeted notorious drug hotspots and brothels in the state capital and surrounding areas.
The Executive Chairman of Damaturu Local Government, Alhaji Bukar Adamu, led the enforcement team comprising officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in this decisive clampdown.
According to Yusuf Ali, Focal Person for Digital and Strategic Communications to the Yobe State Government, the operation was based on credible intelligence and focused on several notorious areas including Zango, YBC, Bakin Kasuwa, Maduri, and Daki Goma, all known for illicit substance abuse and trafficking.
"This effort is in strict compliance with the directive of Governor Mai Mala Buni, who has declared zero tolerance for drug abuse and charged local government authorities and traditional institutions to act swiftly in addressing this growing menace," Adamu stated during the operation.
The NDLEA confirmed that multiple joints and drug hubs were successfully raided, with several suspects found in possession of suspected illicit drugs and substances now in custody. The agency emphasized that the arrests mark the beginning of a sustained campaign against drug-related crimes in Damaturu.
"We are targeting both the supply and consumption chains of illicit drugs. Low-level dealers and users will be brought to justice, and we will continue to expand our surveillance and enforcement activities throughout the week," the agency said in a statement.
The operation is part of a broader mission to dismantle identified enclaves harboring criminal activities, especially those involved in the sale and open consumption of prohibited and controlled substances. This initiative aligns with Governor Buni's administration's commitment to creating a drug-free environment across Yobe State.
Authorities have indicated that similar operations will continue in other parts of the state as part of the government's comprehensive strategy to combat drug abuse and related social vices.
