The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced receiving 129 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, with seven new applications submitted in the past week alone.
This update was provided during the Commission's regular weekly meeting held on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
According to a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, all the requests are currently being processed by the electoral body.
"At its regular weekly meeting held today, Thursday 10th July 2025, the Commission received further updates on additional requests from associations seeking registration as political parties," the statement read.
"Since last week, seven more applications have been received, bringing the total number so far to 129. All the requests are being processed," INEC further stated.
New Digital Platform for Party Registration
In a significant technological advancement, INEC also announced the launch of a new digital platform designed to simplify and streamline the political party registration process.
The platform, which forms part of the Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System, is expected to modernize the registration process and potentially reduce bureaucratic hurdles for associations seeking official party status.
Olumekun revealed that final testing of the portal is expected to be completed within the coming week, suggesting an imminent full launch of the system.
This development comes as Nigeria prepares for future electoral cycles, with the 2027 general elections already on the horizon. The increased number of applications indicates growing political interest and participation in the country's democratic processes.
Political analysts suggest that the high number of applications might reflect both genuine political aspirations and strategic positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
