Former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has firmly declared that he will not return to work for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, emphasizing his continued loyalty to Buhari even after the end of their administration.
Shehu made this declaration during an interview with TVC News programme: Beyond The Headlines, on Thursday, where he discussed his professional relationships and current allegiances.
"Let me tell you, if you have integrity and I'm not pretending that I have, people should judge for themselves," Shehu stated during the interview. "I think a man should serve only one master at a time. You can't serve two masters at the same time, otherwise, you are deceiving yourself or them."
The former presidential spokesman emphasized his current commitment to Buhari, distinguishing himself from others who have shifted allegiances. "I'm currently with Muhammadu Buhari, however, if you are looking to make an example of me with some of the characters you just mentioned, I'm not in that mode," he explained.
Shehu further elaborated on the nature of his continued support for the former president: "When I speak for Buhari these days, I do so out of commitment for a leader who gave me his absolute trust and I feel that he needs my support, otherwise, I would have done like others did, walk away and start something else."
He also clarified that their public communications are now deliberately limited and focused. "Even the statements we make on his behalf, you can see that they are very occasional and specific as we don't want to meddle in issues, otherwise, people will think that there are two presidents in a country," Shehu noted.
"The only president at the moment is President Bola Tinubu and Buhari will not be contesting the space with him," he added, acknowledging the current political leadership.
Shehu's comments come amid ongoing realignments in Nigeria's political landscape as various political figures position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
