Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has clarified that delegates will ultimately decide who emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Ibe addressed the growing speculation surrounding the potential contest between Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, all of whom have indicated interest in securing the coalition's presidential ticket.
"It is the delegates of the party, whether it is a direct or indirect primary, they are the ones who are going to determine the fate of these leaders," Ibe stated. "All of these two fighting or three fighting will be settled by the delegates."
The media aide emphasized that the coalition was formed after its leaders reached a compromise on making necessary sacrifices. He suggested that the democratic process would be followed in selecting the flag bearer, contrary to concerns about potential internal conflicts.
Ibe further criticized the current administration, claiming that Nigeria is being pushed toward a one-party system. "Maybe it's because of the fact that we lost the essence of what democracy is all about because of what Tinubu and his administration has been doing. Everybody is being railroaded into a one-party state. It's about choice, people have the right to choose," he remarked.
The ADC coalition has gained significant attention since its unveiling, with several political heavyweights joining its ranks. Recently, former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam announced his defection from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC, further strengthening the coalition's position.
Political analysts view the coalition as a strategic move to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The coalition brings together key opposition figures who previously contested under different political platforms.
As the political landscape continues to evolve ahead of 2027, the ADC coalition's presidential primary is expected to be a critical moment in shaping Nigeria's opposition strategy.
