Spanish police have revealed that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was likely driving and speeding when the fatal car crash that claimed his life occurred last Thursday in northwestern Spain.
According to the police investigation, evidence from tyre marks at the scene and subsequent tests indicate that Jota was behind the wheel of the Lamborghini when the accident happened in Zamora province.
The crash also resulted in the death of Jota's brother, André Silva, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Investigators believe the luxury sports car suffered a tyre blowout, which led to the tragic incident.
In a statement released on Tuesday, police officials said: "The marks left by one of the Lamborghini's tyres and all the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota."
The investigation has faced significant challenges due to the intensity of the fire that engulfed the vehicle after the crash. Police reported that the blaze almost completely destroyed the car, making forensic analysis particularly difficult.
Authorities have also emphasized that the location where the accident occurred is not considered an accident "black spot," suggesting that road conditions were not a contributing factor to the tragedy.
The football world has been in mourning since news of the 28-year-old Portuguese international's death broke last week. Jota had established himself as a key player for Liverpool since joining the club in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish all the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
