UEFA has announced that a moment of silence will be observed at all UEFA Women's EURO 2025 matches scheduled for today and tomorrow in memory of footballers Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Thursday.
The two football stars died in the early hours of Thursday following a car crash in Zamora, Spain, sending shockwaves throughout the football community worldwide.
UEFA President's Tribute
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin expressed his profound grief in a heartfelt statement: "Just three weeks ago, I had the honour of presenting Diogo Jota with a medal after the UEFA Nations League final, a moment of joy, pride, and celebration that'll now forever be burned in memory with sorrow."
"Rest in peace, dear Diogo. You'll not be forgotten," Čeferin added.
The tragic news comes just weeks after Jota had married his long-time girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, in a ceremony held in Porto last month.
Football World in Mourning
The sudden deaths of Jota and Silva have prompted an outpouring of grief from across the football world, with tributes continuing to flow in from teammates, clubs, and football organizations.
Diogo Jota, who had established himself as a key player for both his club and the Portuguese national team, was known for his clinical finishing and versatility on the pitch.
The UEFA tribute at the Women's EURO 2025 matches will provide an opportunity for the football community to collectively honor the memory of the two players whose lives were cut tragically short.
