Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has presented documentary evidence of his past professional engagement with the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, emphasizing that their interaction was strictly business-oriented and devoid of political motivations.

In a public statement released on Wednesday via X, Obi clarified that he had never met Abacha before being appointed to a task force focused on port decongestion. The meeting, according to Obi, was initiated by a collective of traders and importers, including himself, who were concerned about significant delays in clearing goods at Nigerian ports.

"Our meeting with him was borne out of collective concern as traders and importers over the prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports. We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens seeking pragmatic solutions," Obi stated.

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that their engagement was aimed at advocating for greater efficiency at the ports and proposing measures to improve operations for the benefit of both the business community and the broader Nigerian economy.

To substantiate his claims, Obi released an official letter documenting his appointment to the task force, reiterating his long-standing commitment to transparency and truth in public discourse.

"This clarification is offered in the interest of truth, to reaffirm that our actions were driven solely by a sense of civic duty and not political ambition," he added.

While acknowledging that his explanation might not convince critics he described as "mischief makers with ulterior motives," Obi maintained that placing the facts in the public domain was necessary for historical accuracy and to uphold his transparency pledge to Nigerians.

The revelation comes amid ongoing political positioning ahead of future electoral contests, with various political figures and commentators speculating about Obi's political future and potential alliances.
