The senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has confidently declared that she would secure re-election in 2027 despite opposition from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, should she decide to contest for the same seat.

Kingibe, who currently serves as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, made this assertion on Tuesday while appearing as a guest on Political Paradigm, a programme aired on Channels Television.

The Labour Party senator expressed unwavering confidence that the people of Abuja would vote her back into office if she seeks re-election, directly challenging Wike's July 2024 assertion that she would not return to the red chamber in 2027.

"I know that I will win in a landslide victory, bigger than the last one. The last one, bear in mind, that I went to the Senate with one of the highest, if not the highest votes of any legislator," Kingibe stated.

She further clarified that her previous electoral success wasn't solely attributable to the Peter Obi factor. "And it was not just about (Peter) Obi. Yes, he brought some votes, but I also brought some votes to him that would not normally go to him," she explained.

In what appears to be an escalation of the political tension between the senator and the minister, Kingibe claimed that FCT residents harbor resentment toward the former Rivers State governor, who was appointed FCT Minister by President Bola Tinubu in August 2023.

According to Kingibe, the minister has treated the people of the FCT with disdain and contempt since assuming office, a factor she believes will work in her favor during the next election cycle.

The public exchange between these two prominent political figures highlights the growing political dynamics in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both sides seemingly positioning for influence over the territory's political landscape.
