The youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organisation has commended the recent unveiling of Enugu Air by Governor Peter Mbah's administration, describing it as a catalyst for economic prosperity in the South-East region.
Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, in a statement released on Tuesday, praised the initiative as a testament to the prudent management of Enugu State's economy under Governor Mbah's leadership.
"This is the first of its kind in the South-East, and just the second in the country after Akwa Ibom, an oil-rich state. It speaks volumes," Nnabuike stated. "It is a milestone achievement and should be commended by all men of goodwill in the South-East and beyond."
The youth leader expressed particular satisfaction that one of the airline's captains is a youth from Enugu State, highlighting the employment opportunities the venture will create. "We are even more delighted that one of the captains is a youth from Enugu State, which is another indication that Enugu Air will provide more jobs for the youths, advance the economic prosperity of the state, and indeed the South-East," he added.
In a significant development, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has already approved the commencement of domestic flight operations by Enugu Air, just about 24 hours after the airline's launch. The airline will initially operate through XEJET as its operational partner while awaiting its Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
Nnabuike called on the entire people of Enugu State to support Governor Mbah's government regardless of political affiliations, emphasizing that "he is showing governance and it is time for everyone to support the government fully."
The establishment of Enugu Air marks a significant milestone in the state's economic development strategy, positioning it as only the second state in Nigeria to own an airline after Akwa Ibom's Ibom Air. Industry analysts suggest this could trigger a new wave of state-owned airlines across Nigeria if successful.
