Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, has defended the inclusion of opposition leaders with previous governance failures in his coalition, stating that their experiences are essential to moving Nigeria forward if he is elected President in 2027.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Ibrahim Umar, spokesman of Peter Obi Media Reports, the former Labour Party presidential candidate emphasized that politicians who may have failed in previous governments bring critical insights to his team.
"You need the experience of those who have failed and those who have succeeded in moving on, and I need everyone," Obi stated. "It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system."
The statement also revealed that Obi believes a single four-year term is sufficient for a competent leader to implement positive changes in Nigeria, highlighting his confidence in delivering rapid transformation.
This clarification comes after Obi confirmed in a Sunday interview that he will be contesting for the presidency in 2027, putting to rest speculations that he might serve as running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The coalition, which reportedly aims to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the next general election, has attracted various opposition figures from different political backgrounds, creating what Obi describes as a diverse team with complementary experiences.
Political analysts note that this coalition strategy represents a significant shift in Nigerian politics, where former rivals are setting aside differences to form a united front against the incumbent administration.
