Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, has claimed that Peter Obi has effectively conceded his presidential ambition to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today program on Monday, Bwala asserted that Obi has been relegated to a secondary role and is now competing with former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi for the vice-presidential ticket.
"Peter Obi now is a non-issue. He's a non-starter. Already, he has conceded his presidential ambition to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar," Bwala stated during the interview.
According to Bwala, Obi has been positioned to assume the role of Director-General of the ADC campaign. "Now he has become a second fiddle but he needs to fight for the vice presidential ticket with Rotimi Amaechi. And from what we are hearing they have convinced him that he will be Director General of the campaign to lead the movement, and that when they win election, Atiku will do one time and then Peter Obi will come back to become president," he claimed.
The comments come amid growing political realignments as the recently launched ADC coalition platform brings together several key political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi ahead of future electoral contests.
This development represents a significant shift in Nigeria's political landscape, particularly considering Obi's strong showing as the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, where he emerged as a formidable third-force candidate.
Neither Peter Obi nor Atiku Abubakar has publicly responded to Bwala's claims at the time of this report. The ADC coalition, formed as an opposition platform, continues to attract attention as political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
