Presidential aide Daniel Bwala has made a bold statement regarding his former principal and ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, suggesting that he may not have been destined to become Nigeria's president despite multiple attempts.

Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today programme on Monday, Bwala dismissed the chances of Atiku and other opposition coalition leaders such as Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections.

"There is my former principal who believes that he is going to win," Bwala stated. "In all honesty, I have expressed my opinion that it may never have been destined by God to be a president in Nigeria because he has done everything he needs to do to be president and he did not win the presidency."

Bwala, who previously served as a spokesperson for Atiku's presidential campaign during the 2023 general election before switching allegiance to President Tinubu, emphasized that 2023 represented Atiku's greatest opportunity to secure the presidency.

"[The year] 2023 was the biggest opportunity that my former principal Atiku Abubakar had. He will never have that kind of privilege again," he added.

The comments come amid ongoing political realignments as various opposition figures consider strategies to challenge the incumbent administration in the next general election cycle.

Atiku Abubakar has contested for Nigeria's highest office multiple times, including in 1993, 2007, 2019, and most recently in 2023, when he emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate but lost to Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political analysts note that Bwala's comments reflect the growing sentiment within certain political circles that the opposition may need fresh faces to present a formidable challenge to the ruling party in 2027.
