The Abia State Government has expressed serious concern over the alarming increase in cult-related activities throughout the state, prompting immediate action from authorities to address the growing security threat.
Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed this during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia on Monday, where he detailed the outcomes of the executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
According to Kanu, the government has directed security agencies to take decisive measures against individuals involved in cult activities, describing them as "undesirable elements threatening public peace."
"The state government has observed with dismay the growing incidents of cult activities in the state," Kanu stated. "As a responsible government, this administration will spare no efforts in ensuring that the State is rid of cult activities."
The commissioner emphasized that Governor Otti's administration would not tolerate any cult group disturbing the peace and safety of innocent citizens across Abia State.
Other Key Developments
In addition to addressing security concerns, Kanu announced that staff of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, who were disengaged by the previous administration between 2018 and 2022, have begun receiving their outstanding entitlements. He confirmed that 249 individuals have already received their payments.
The commissioner also revealed that the recruitment of health workers, recently approved by Governor Otti, has commenced. The Abia State Civil Service Commission has opened application portals for interested candidates to apply.
These developments reflect the current administration's commitment to addressing both security challenges and administrative issues affecting the state's workforce and healthcare system.
