The Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has launched a grassroots initiative to combat the growing threat of banditry in the region. The Community Development Association (CDA) has issued a directive for all traditional chiefs and ward heads to return and reside in Babanla during this period of heightened insecurity.
BenriNews reports that many traditional rulers had previously relocated to Ilorin, the state capital, following repeated invasions by suspected bandits in parts of the local government area. The community's decisive action comes as Babanla has been identified as one of the state's flashpoints for banditry activities.
Recent Kidnappings Spark Community Action
The community's response follows a disturbing series of kidnappings in recent days. Two underage children from the household of the Olori (wife of the community head) were abducted just six days ago. The Olori herself narrowly escaped the attempted abduction, prompting the kidnappers to take the two teenage children instead.
According to sources, the abductors have demanded a ransom of N200 million for the children's release. The victims are believed to be held at a location near Baba Sango.
In a separate incident approximately ten days ago, the chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Babanla Branch, was also kidnapped. Reports indicate that the captors deliberately incapacitated him to prevent any escape attempt and are demanding N10 million as ransom.
Internal Security Concerns
Unconfirmed allegations have emerged suggesting that certain prominent individuals within the community may be acting as informants and providing logistical support to the bandits. These claims have prompted calls for thorough investigation and increased vigilance among community members.
Community leaders are urging residents to remain calm, cooperative, and alert, assuring them that comprehensive measures are being implemented to address the security crisis. Meanwhile, security operatives are expected to intensify their operations in the area to prevent further attacks and secure the safe return of the kidnapped victims.
The community's proactive stance represents a significant shift in local response to banditry, with leaders choosing to confront the threat directly rather than abandoning their traditional posts.
