The Oro Community in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has issued an urgent appeal to the state government to strengthen security measures in the area following a disturbing wave of kidnappings and banditry incidents.

In a statement released on Friday, the National President of Oro Community Association, Prof Bababode James Bojuwoye, through the National Publicity Secretary, Adebayo Olodan, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the community and its environs.

Recent Incidents Spark Fear

"We, the concerned citizens and residents of Oro are compelled to bring to the attention of the Kwara State Government and security agents, the alarming rate of kidnappings that have plagued our neighbouring communities," the statement read.

The community highlighted recent violent incidents, noting that "two people were killed while three others were reportedly kidnapped at Agbeola Oro while about a week later, some residents of Okerimi-Oro were allegedly taken to unknown destination by suspected bandits."

According to Prof Bojuwoye, a former provost of College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, these incidents have created a climate of fear among residents, disrupting daily activities and undermining the community's sense of security.

Economic Impact and Community Trauma

The statement further emphasized that the kidnappings have not only caused emotional trauma for residents but have also significantly affected economic activities in Oro and neighboring communities.

"The recent surge in kidnappings has not only caused emotional trauma for residents and citizens of our community but it has continued to affect economic activities in Oro and neighbouring communities," the statement noted.

Call for Immediate Action

The community has called on the government to deploy more security personnel to Oro and surrounding areas. They also requested that security agencies conduct intelligence-led operations to apprehend the kidnappers and dismantle their networks.

"We will be pleased if the Kwara State government and security agencies take immediate and concrete actions to address this security challenge," Prof Bojuwoye stated.

The community has expressed willingness to collaborate with relevant authorities by providing necessary information and support to ensure the safety and security of residents.
