The Ebonyi State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Scamb Nwokolo, has strongly condemned the killing of 13 Ebonyi indigenes who were residing in Ogbuoji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The victims were reportedly attacked on the evening of June 30, 2025, during their regular monthly meeting. According to reports, the brutal assault was carried out by unidentified assailants in what has been described as an unprovoked manner.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki, the state CAN chairman expressed profound dismay and sorrow over the incident, describing it as a "senseless act of violence against humanity."

"This shocking event is deeply regrettable, barbaric, and signals a perilous regression to a state of nature where humanity's most fundamental rights are disregarded," Nwokolo stated.

The religious body questioned the audacity of the attackers, wondering how any individual could contemplate such a heinous act against innocent and unarmed individuals who were simply conducting a community meeting.

Call for Justice and Support

Dr. Nwokolo extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Ebonyi State, particularly to the families of those who lost loved ones in the attack. He called on the Government of Anambra State to take swift action to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice.

While urging both state governments to implement measures to support the bereaved families, he emphasized that although no compensation can truly substitute for the loss of a loved one, efforts should be made to alleviate their burden during this difficult time.

CAN also appealed to the people of Anambra State to encourage solidarity and a collective effort towards combating the rising tide of violence in the region. Meanwhile, prayers were offered for the slain youths in commemoration of their souls.
