The Taraba State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the killing of a 29-year-old Fulani herder whose body was discovered with gunshot wounds and signs of mutilation in a forest near Rafin Kada, Wukari Local Government Area.
Nura Umaru went missing on June 22 while grazing his father's cattle, according to police sources. After a two-day search by family members, his remains were discovered on June 24 around 7:00 a.m. in a bush close to the grazing area.
Gruesome Discovery and Police Response
DSP Umar Aji, the Officer-in-Charge of the local outstation, reported that the victim was found with his intestines protruding, suggesting he was shot at close range from behind. Police detectives were immediately deployed to the scene for documentation and recovery of the body.
Following Islamic rites, the police handed over Umaru's remains to his family for burial. The command has promised to bring the perpetrators to justice and has increased patrols and surveillance around the Rafin Kada area to prevent further violence.
"The command reiterates its commitment to ensure that lives and property are protected, as it will not tolerate lawlessness or targeted killings in any part of the state," the police statement emphasized.
Security Concerns in the Region
This incident comes amid growing concerns about herder-related violence in various parts of Nigeria. The Taraba State Police Command's swift response indicates authorities are taking the matter seriously to prevent potential escalation of tensions in the area.
Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through emergency channels.
