Breakthrough Peace Agreement in Taraba State
In a significant development aimed at ending years of violent conflict, Tiv and Fulani communities in Gassol local government area of Taraba State have signed a historic peace accord. The agreement, facilitated by the leadership of the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), marks a crucial step toward establishing lasting peace in the region.
The peace initiative, led by Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, was conducted on Monday at the 6 Brigade Headquarters conference room in Jalingo. This non-kinetic approach comes in response to escalating tensions and unresolved disputes between the two ethnic groups that have plagued the area for years.
Military Leadership Facilitates Dialogue
Speaking at the gathering, Brigadier General Uwa emphasized that the intervention was a proactive measure to prevent violence and rebuild trust between the communities. The meeting brought together key stakeholders including Gassol Council Chairman Abubakar Usman, traditional rulers, community elders, and security officials.
"We cannot continue to witness recurring communal violence in this area," Brigadier General Uwa stated firmly. He cautioned against vigilante justice and emphasized that progress can only be achieved through unity and mutual respect. The Commandant also commended the Gassol Chairman for his active role in mobilizing support for the peace initiative.
Commitments from Both Communities
Representatives from both the Tiv and Fulani communities made several important resolutions during the meeting. They collectively agreed to:
- Abandon all forms of hostilities against each other
- Embrace open communication to address grievances
- Reject the harboring or protection of criminal elements
- Work closely with security agencies
- Provide timely intelligence to prevent future conflicts
The formal peace pact was signed by representatives of both ethnic groups, who affirmed their commitment to the resolutions and pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities for full implementation.
Local Government Support
Gassol Council Chairman Abubakar Usman expressed appreciation for the Nigerian Army's efforts, particularly the troops under 6 Brigade, for their dedication to ensuring peace in the area. He described the initiative as timely and essential for rebuilding trust and fostering collaboration among the communities.
"This peace accord represents a new beginning for our people," Usman remarked. "We are committed to making it work for the benefit of all residents of Gassol."
The peace agreement comes at a critical time for Taraba State, which has witnessed numerous incidents of communal violence in recent years. Observers hope this accord will serve as a model for resolving similar conflicts in other parts of the state and beyond.
