The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (ASUU-MOAUM), has issued a strong call for security agencies to track down those responsible for the recent massacre in Yelwata, Benue State, where approximately 200 people were killed by suspected armed herders.

The deadly attack, which occurred during a coordinated assault on the community penultimate weekend, has drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters, including the academic community.

Union Demands Swift Action

In a statement released on Tuesday, Comrades Ali Sule Ako and Daniel Chile, Chairperson and Secretary of the union respectively, strongly condemned the attack and urged government authorities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.

"The union expressed deep concern about the incessant attacks on Benue communities and warned that if the government fails to stop the violence, it poses grave risks to food security not only in the state but across the country," the statement read in part.

ASUU-MOAUM called on both Federal and State Governments to fulfill their constitutional responsibility of securing the lives and property of all Nigerians, with particular emphasis on those in rural and vulnerable areas who are often the primary targets of such attacks.

Call for Humanitarian Support

The union expressed solidarity with families and communities affected by the attacks, particularly in Yelwata, and advocated for immediate humanitarian support. They also called for the implementation of effective resettlement programmes to aid the safe return and rehabilitation of displaced persons.

"Those responsible for these heinous crimes in Benue State must be tracked down and brought to justice without delay," the union emphasized, urging security agencies to act with urgency, diligence, and fairness to prevent further bloodshed.

The Yelwata massacre represents one of the deadliest attacks in recent times in Benue State, which has long been plagued by farmer-herder conflicts and related security challenges.
