Popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has staged a unique protest at the residence of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja, bringing schoolchildren to highlight the ongoing teachers' strike.
The demonstration comes in response to Wike's recent announcement that his administration would withhold 10 percent of statutory allocations to area councils due to their failure to implement the new minimum wage for primary school teachers, which has resulted in an extended strike action.
Improvised Classroom at Minister's Gate
On Monday, VDM gathered schoolchildren dressed in uniforms and conducted an improvised class session directly in front of the minister's gate. During the unusual lesson, he taught the children the alphabet with politically charged examples.
"S for Suegbe, T for Tinubu, W for Wike," VDM called out while the children repeated after him. The social media critic declared that Wike's gate would henceforth serve as the pupils' new classroom until the situation is resolved.
Background to the Protest
The protest highlights the growing tension between the FCT administration and area councils over the implementation of the new minimum wage for primary school teachers. The minister's decision to withhold funds has been controversial, with critics arguing it further punishes the education sector and the children who are already suffering from the teachers' strike.
This demonstration represents the latest in a series of public confrontations between VeryDarkMan and political figures, as the social media activist continues to leverage his platform to highlight governance issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
Neither Minister Wike nor his office has issued an official response to the protest at the time of reporting.
