President Donald Trump is facing impeachment threats from Democratic lawmakers after ordering military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities without seeking congressional approval.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the action, emphasizing that the War Powers Act, which restricts a president's ability to deploy U.S. military forces without legislative consent, must be enforced.
"No president should be allowed to unilaterally march this nation into something as consequential as war with erratic threats and no strategy," Schumer wrote on X.
Growing Congressional Opposition
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was more direct in her criticism, stating that Trump has "impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations" and describing his actions as "absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment."
Fellow Representative Ilhan Omar characterized the strikes as "a dangerous and reckless escalation of an already volatile conflict" in the Middle East and called for "this madness" to end before more lives are lost.
Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari went further, labeling Trump's military action "illegal" and announcing her intention to call for an immediate emergency session of Congress to vote on the War Powers Resolution.
Trump's Announcement of the Strikes
President Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce what he described as a successful attack that destroyed Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
"A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home," Trump stated, adding that "no other country in the world could do it better than America" and that it was "now time for peace."
Iranian officials have reportedly downplayed the impact of the strikes, claiming there was "no serious damage" to their nuclear facilities.
Regional Implications
The military action comes amid already heightened tensions in the Middle East. Hamas has expressed "full confidence in Iran's ability" in response to the U.S. attack, while Iran has warned that the strikes "will have everlasting consequences."
Reports indicate that prior to the strikes, both Trump and Turkish President Erdogan had sought U.S.-Iran talks, but these efforts were apparently derailed by silence from Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
In a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Iranian President Pezeshkian asserted that "Iran's nuclear rights cannot be taken away by war."
U.S. officials have confirmed that B-2 bombers were moved to Guam as Trump considered military options against Iran.
The situation continues to develop as international reactions pour in and the U.S. Congress prepares to address the President's unilateral military action.
