The Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the Society for Family Health (SFH), has urged women of reproductive age to embrace family planning methods to prevent unintended pregnancies and ensure proper child spacing.

This call was made during a bi-annual review meeting of the 'Delivering Innovation In Self-Care' (DISC 2.0) Project held in Abeokuta on Wednesday. The meeting brought together health secretaries, reproductive health officers, health education officers, and monitoring and evaluation officers.

Government's Commitment to Family Planning

Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, highlighted the state government's proactive approach in ensuring the availability of family planning commodities.

"Ogun State has been commended by partners and the Federal Ministry of Health because the governor has, in two consecutive years, procured family planning commodities to supplement what the federal government has been providing," Dr. Ogunsola stated.

He further explained that measures were being implemented to enhance postpartum care by offering mothers their preferred contraceptive options after delivery. This initiative aims to improve women's healthcare and reduce maternal mortality rates in the state.

SFH's Support and Project Goals

Mr. Fidelis Edet, Business and Strategic Information Manager for the DISC 2.0 Project at SFH, commended the Ogun State Government for empowering women to manage their reproductive health needs through self-injection methods.

Edet noted that the modern contraceptives prevalence rate (MCPR) remains low at 15 percent, emphasizing the need for increased advocacy, adoption, and sustained use of contraceptives for healthy child spacing.

According to Edet, the DISC 2.0 project in Ogun State aims to achieve improved Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) outcomes by expanding self-care solutions and integrating them as essential components of a resilient health system.

Federal Support and Call for Awareness

Mrs. Stella Adebayo, representing the Federal Ministry of Health, praised Ogun State for prioritizing family planning services and ensuring adequate supplies of necessary commodities.

She urged service providers and other stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns among women of reproductive age regarding the benefits of family planning services.

The collaborative effort between the Ogun State Government and SFH represents a significant step toward improving maternal health outcomes and promoting responsible family planning in the state.
