The Chairman of Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abia State, Felix Olunkwa, has revealed how media publicity played a crucial role in saving his life during his kidnapping ordeal in 2024.

Speaking at the monthly Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the State Secretariat in Umuahia on Wednesday, Olunkwa expressed profound gratitude to journalists whose sustained coverage of his abduction prompted government action that ultimately secured his release.

Media Coverage as a Lifeline

"When I was kidnapped, you did not keep quiet, you gave wide publicity and you did all you could do to reach out to the State government for my rescue. I thank God that I did not die in captivity and I am here to say a word of appreciation," Olunkwa stated during his address to journalists.

The NIPR Chairman emphasized that the extensive media coverage alerted relevant authorities, including the Abia State government, creating pressure that prevented what could have been a tragic outcome in the kidnappers' hideout.

Olunkwa pledged to strengthen the partnership between NIPR and NUJ during his tenure, commending the executive members of Abia NUJ for their efforts in the state.

NUJ's Response

In response, Chidi Asonye, Chairman of NUJ Abia State Council, expressed gratitude for Olunkwa's safe return and acknowledged the significance of his visit to recognize journalists' contributions to his rescue.

Asonye reaffirmed the commitment of journalists to continue their role in fostering a better society and promised enhanced collaborative efforts between NUJ and NIPR in Abia State.

The case highlights the power of media in combating kidnapping, which remains a significant security challenge in various parts of Nigeria.
