Several communities in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State have established vigilante groups to protect themselves against potential threats from herdsmen, following recent attacks in Benue State and similar incidents reported within Imo communities.

Orogwe community in Umunoha, Owerri West LGA, has taken a proactive step by inaugurating a 12-man vigilante security team to address growing security concerns in the area.

Community Leaders Emphasize Responsible Security Operations

During the inauguration ceremony, Pastor Jerry Atuzie, the immediate past President-General of Orogwe Community Development Union, highlighted the urgent need for local security measures.

"Following what is happening, it has become imperative to set up a security outfit to contain the security challenges facing the community," Atuzie stated. He congratulated the selected vigilante members while cautioning them against misusing their positions.

The ceremony was attended by prominent community members, including Felix Oguzie, Chairman of the Ubah Welfare Union, who similarly advised the vigilante group against using their authority for personal interests.

Rising Security Concerns Across Imo State

This development comes amid increasing security challenges in various parts of Imo State, with some incidents allegedly linked to herdsmen activities. The formation of community-based security outfits represents a grassroots response to perceived threats when official security measures are deemed insufficient.

Other communities within Owerri West LGA are reportedly considering similar initiatives to enhance local security arrangements and protect residents from potential attacks.

The Imo State Police Command has previously engaged with stakeholders in various local government areas, including a recent meeting with Oguta stakeholders, to address insecurity concerns across the state.
