The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that three people were killed in a deadly attack on Tse Orjime community in Mbalagh Council Ward, Makurdi Local Government Area on Thursday evening.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, armed assailants invaded the community at approximately 6:00 p.m. on May 29, 2025, leading to the deaths.
"Security operatives in the area responded promptly and pursued the attackers into the surrounding bushes," DSP Anene stated in the official police report.
Aftermath Sparks Community Unrest
In the aftermath of the attack, tensions escalated as angry youths attempted to set fire to the residence of Honorable Alfred Berger, the lawmaker representing the constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly.
Police officers intervened quickly to prevent the destruction of the lawmaker's property, successfully containing what could have developed into further violence.
"At the end of the operation, three corpses were recovered and taken to General Hospital, North Bank," the police spokesperson confirmed.
Investigation Underway
The police have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and to apprehend those responsible. No arrests have been reported yet in connection with the incident.
This attack adds to a series of security challenges in Benue State, which has experienced various forms of communal violence in recent years.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while the investigation continues, assuring the public that efforts are being intensified to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further attacks in the region.
